Spring 2021

*** Due to current Covid-19 mitigations, the Welcome Back One-Day Racquetball Shootout, that was scheduled for April 17th, has been postponed to May 15th. Hopefully, once more people become vaccinated, the positivity rate will come down, allowing Illinois to move to the Bridge phase. We’ll have to wait a little longer to get back together, but it will be well worth waiting for! Please mark your calendars for May 15th, and we’ll give it another go, mitigations permitting. In the meantime, stay safe, healthy, fit, and ready to compete! ***

Greetings, Team Illinois!

We’re starting to feel more optimistic about having health clubs safely open with competitive racquetball starting to emerge from a year-long hibernation. It was exactly one year ago that we kicked off the 35th Annual KWM Gutterman Shamrock Shootout with over 185 players participating! We had a great tournament weekend, and, as luck would have it, this was our last indoor sanctioned tournament in Illinois for 2020. Fortunately, we had no instances of folks reporting the virus as a result of the event – and we certainly want to keep that track record intact as we look to get back on the courts!

Please view the Tournament Calendar on the right side of this page, and note that ISRA State Singles and Doubles now have tentative dates to be held this fall. As of this writing (3/12/21), the State and County Health Authorities have not allowed competitive tournament play in racquetball (we are classified as a moderate-risk sport) and will not do so until DuPage County meets specific targets regarding both infection rates and vaccinated residents. We believe that everything is moving in the right direction to make this happen, and we have a full roster of events on the schedule starting with the NMRA International Championships July 08 – 11 at Glass Court! That event is available on R2 for signup, and as a reminder to everyone, it is open to all players 40+ featuring round robin and pool play in all divisions! The NMRA has a hotel block reserved at the Embassy Suites in Lombard with shuttle service to the club on a regular schedule. And, there will be a Saturday night banquet and awards program. Consider this as a great way to kick off your (delayed) competitive season with some old friends!

Junior Team Illinois (JTI) is back on the court at the Glass Court in Lombard on Sunday mornings after a required “pause” per the aforementioned health departments. The Juniors are a bright ray of light, with dedicated coaches, training, and lots of fun. The group has been separated into three skill levels this season to provide more targeted instruction and development. PLEASE help us get more kids involved by contacting Glass Court or Carolyn Vazquez about how the program can help your child (or teen) learn a lifetime sport!

As you get back on the court, USA Racquetball has published some considerations for safer play, and you might want to go and review them before competing or practicing. Visit www.usaracquetball.com. Additionally, check out the latest issue of USAR’s Serving Up the News (publication date 3/15/21) for an article by Dr. Brendan Giljum about preparing to compete again!

Notice of Annual Meeting and Election of ISRA Board Members

The ISRA Board will hold its Annual Meeting on Wednesday, June 16, 2021. As with all ISRA meetings, this meeting is open to the membership. The Annual Meeting is particularly important since all members attending have a vote in the election of the ISRA Board of Directors. If you plan to attend, please contact ISRA Board Secretary John Thorson at johnthorson7@gmail.com for mode, time, and location.

Board positions are staggered two-year terms. There are six open seats on the Board for this year’s election. As part of the process, the Nominating Committee will determine which sitting Board members wish to run for re-election.

According to Article IV, Section IV.2 of the ISRA Bylaws (ratified by the ISRA Board of Directors in December 2013 and posted on the ISRA website):

Additional Director candidates must be nominated in writing by one or more ISRA/USAR members, endorsed by signed petition of at least 50 members, and received by the President prior to May 1. If there are any additional Director nominations, the President shall first verify that the nominee is in agreement to run and serve and shall give notice of said nomination to the public via the ISRA website and email communication on or before May 15 but in no case fewer than 30 days before the Annual Meeting date. The election shall take place at the Annual Meeting in June, by ballot, with only members present voting. If there are no additional nominations, the Nominating Committee’s slate shall be accepted automatically.

Additionally, any ISRA member who wishes to help improve the quality of racquetball in Illinois and familiarize themselves with Board processes is welcome to join the Auxiliary Board. Come out and support Illinois Racquetball!

Both the ISRA and USA Racquetball are dedicated to ensuring that racquetball not only survives but grows and prospers as we move forward. The pandemic will end, and the programs being developed now for our next generation of players, the work being done to maintain courts, the Instructors Program to teach and mentor players, and the competitive tournaments in the US and across the world will make the difference in racquetball being one of the sports that comes out of this stronger and more united than ever. Please consider renewing or extending your membership during these trying times if you can – we need your support to keep moving forward, and members are the lifeblood of the organization!

Thank you for your support!!
